Are you having trouble finding a job? Here are ten tips that Syracuse alums can take advantage of immediately!
1. If you're not already on LinkedIn, create a profile and join the Syracuse University Alumni Network group. You'll automatically be connected to roughly 15,000 other SU alumni.
2. Remember that as a Syracuse alum, you have FULL access to everything SU Career Services offers - resume critiques, career counseling, interview preparation, etc. - and it's all FREE!
3. Keep an eye out for "SUccess in the City" networking events happening in D.C. We typically host one every spring and the events are a great way to network with other SU alumni.
4. Be a mentor yourself or consider connecting with a mentor through "Mentor @ SU." Contact Alumni Programs Coordinator Kim Brown for more details on this exciting program.
5. Did you know that Twitter is an amazing tool to make connections within your industry? Follow Career Services' Kim Brown (@kimincuse) and Dan Klamm (@danklamm) for tips on making the most of your Twitter experience.
6. Networking can happen in the most random places - at the gym, at Starbucks, in the elevator - keep that in mind and remember to always ask for business cards and to hold on to them! You never know when they may come in handy.
7. Whatever you do, don't get discouraged if your job search is taking longer than you'd like. You may be lacking the focus needed to land a dream position - and if you're having trouble finding that focus, Career Services can help.
8. Realize that career transitions happen all the time. If you're working in the field you studied in college and find that you're miserable, that's OK! Our office works with alumni all the time to help them discover new career paths.
9. As much as we'd like them to, jobs won't come knocking at our doors. Identify companies where you'd like to work and take the initiative to get there. That means engaging with those companies on Twitter, networking with current employees on LinkedIn, and asking us in Career Services what contacts we might have for you.
10. Make sure to pay attention to all of the events happening at Greenberg House - it's your SU home way from Syracuse!
You can reach the Career Services office by calling 315.443.3616 or visit us online at our website and/or Facebook page. GO ORANGE!

Professor Jeffrey Good will discuss his research on how patients and health care providers interact, and how it can be applied to improve patient-provider communication.
