Gift to Syracuse University from D.C.-area resident and Arts and Sciences alumnus Paul Greenberg '65 to support SU in D.C. Speaker Initiative

SU alumnus Paul Greenberg has a passion for SU and for getting the SU message heard in the Washington, D.C., and surrounding areas. To further this effort, he recently committed a gift to the University to fund the annual SUinDC Speaker Initiative, which will promote the University's areas of excellence through signature events in Washington, D.C. The goal of these events will be to ensure SUinDC makes valuable contributions to important dialogues on pertinent issues of the day.

Greenberg says his gift will build on an already sound foundation, “I am committed to the Washington, D.C., area, and I believe it’s an important region for Syracuse University. SU has a strong message and a lot to share with the D.C. community. We’ve already done marvelous things here, but I would like to give Syracuse a higher profile in the D.C. area and the best way is through the operations associated with the Greenberg House. My gift to the University will help implement programs that will benefit the D.C. community and help get the SU message out.” The first event sponsored by the SUinDC Speaker Initiative is planned for fall 2011.

Greenberg is president of Greenberg Realty Company and has been involved with the development and construction of properties in Virginia, Maryland, Washington, D.C., and North Carolina since he founded the company shortly after graduating from SU. He is also the former chairman/president of Beamhit LLC, a Maryland company involved in the high-tech training of military and law enforcement communities. Greenberg and three others founded Beamhit in 1997 as a manufacturer of target shooting equipment. The company was then purchased by L-3 Communications Holdings Inc. in 2004.

His civic endeavors include involvement with various Capital-region philanthropies and educational institutions through his family foundations, the Harold & Sylvia Greenberg Foundation Inc. and the Abraham S. & Minnie Kay Foundation Inc.

Greenberg has had a long-standing relationship with SU. He is a former member of the Maxwell School Advisory Board and helped build support for the purchase of Greenberg House, the University’s academic, alumni and recruitment center in Washington, D.C., that is named in his honor. Greenberg also supports the Maxwell School and Athletics and has hosted SU events in the Naples, Florida, community.

“Paul has been such an important member of the SU community in D.C. He has contributed to the success of many SU students, and believes in the power of an SU education and the contribution our students can make to society. We thank him for the immeasurable impact he has had on SUinDC,” says Ann Donahue Yockey G’83, executive director of regional operations for Greater Washington.

Greenberg’s gift will be counted in the D.C. regional total of The Campaign for Syracuse University. With a goal of $1 billion, The Campaign for Syracuse University is the most ambitious fundraising effort in SU’s history. By supporting faculty excellence, student access, interdisciplinary programs, capital projects and other institutional priorities, the campaign is continuing to drive Scholarship in Action—the University’s vision to provide students, faculty and communities with the insights needed to incite positive and lasting change in the world.
